FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ill. - A former local police officer charged with "involuntary manslaughter" faced a judge via video conference Monday morning.

Franklin County State's Attorney Evan Owens says the judge set an arraignment date of August 14 for former Buckner Police Officer William McKinney.

A grand jury returned a three-count indictment against McKinney on Friday.

The indictment says McKinney beat a man he was trying to arrest, 62-year-old Roy Barnart.

Barnhart died from his injuries at a St. Louis hospital on July 7.

Buckner Mayor John Coder says McKinney has been fired from his job as a police officer.

He's in the Franklin County Jail with bond set at $500,000.
