POSSUM TROT, Ky.---How far would you go to stop someone from stealing from you? Deputies say a local convenience store owner went too far after a customer didn't pay.
He chased the man across county lines and into another town, before the thief got away.
Now officers are in charge and they're getting help from a rather unusual witness.
The store owner told officers he let the suspect get away when he started driving recklessly but this guy will likely be caught thanks to an attentive street musician.
A sound you wouldn't expect to hear at a gas station; live music.
Charles Harp ministers through music.

"I go all over the place," Harp said.

Call it providence, if you like; today Harp happened to be at the Possum Trot Quick Mart.

"I was just sitting there playing, playing and singing," Harp said.

Then the store owner ran outside.

"He was just yelling hey hey," Harp said.

The owner hopped into his car to chase someone who stole 60 dollars in fuel.

The chase ended miles away in Paducah, and only because the suspect started driving dangerously.  Marshall County Sheriff Deputy Eddie McGuire said for safety's sake, the owner shouldn't have chased him to begin with.

"You never know what the person you're pursuing is thinking, McGuire said."

Surveillance cameras were rolling at the time. Right now the owner is unable to pull the video but will be able to soon.  Officers say between that video and the musician's eyes, it should be easy to identify the guy who got away.

"That's how we solve most crimes, with the public help." McGuire said.

Harp is happy give investigators a vehicle and suspect description, but wishes the suspect would've listened to the words off his songs, and not just the music.

Some do some don't, you know.

The store owner told officers the suspects car had no license plate and the man driving the car picked up a female from the side of the road just a few miles away from the gas station. They think this was all premeditated.

They have a person of interest who they believe lives at a Paducah motel, they're reaching out to Paducah Police for help.

If you have any information that could help crack the case, you are urged to call Marshall County Crime Stoppers.  270 - 527 - cops.
