Jefferson County, Illinois Sheriff: Grandson charged with his grandmother's murder

UPDATE (7:50 p.m.) - The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office tells Local 6 that they've charged Timothy Newell with the murder of his grandmother, Rita "Betty" Newell.  

His bond has been set at $5 million.

The investigation continues by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Illinois State Police, Jefferson County State's Attorney's office and the Jefferson County Coroner.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ill. - Jefferson County deputies arrest the grandson of an 84 year-old woman found dead inside her home.

Jefferson County deputies say Rita Newell was found inside her home after a well-fare check Thursday afternoon.  Deputies say 42 year-old Timothy Newell forced his way inside the home.

Deputies found Timothy Newell in Saline County, Missouri on Friday.  Newell hasn't been formally charged with the death of his grandmother.

He's currently charged with unlawful possession of stolen or converted vehicle.  Deputies say Newell will be brought back to southern Illinois next week.

An autopsy was performed on Newell Friday, but the coroner says the results won't be available for three to four weeks.
