SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - State Sen. Matt Murphy is absent from legislative proceedings a day after he was injured in the annual lawmaker softball game in Springfield.

A Senate Republican spokeswoman, Patty Schuh, says it appears Murphy dislocated his kneecap and he's going to have an MRI. Republican Sen. Pamela Althoff says he may require surgery.

The Palatine Republican was hit with a ball in the leg during the fifth inning at a Springfield park. The game was temporarily halted and an ambulance took him from the scene.

The game is a tradition that matches up lawmakers from the House and Senate.
