Illinois to allow online voter registration

CHICAGO - Illinois has become the 18th state to allow online voter registration.
Supporters hope the new system will increase the number of people registering while cutting the administrative costs of processing registrations on paper.
Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation Saturday that makes the necessary changes to Illinois' election code. Quinn endorsed the idea in this year's state of the state address.
Backers are confident the law can be implemented without risking any increase in voter fraud.
The law gives election authorities until July of next year to have the system in place.
To register online applicants will have to use a driver's license and the last four digits of their Social Security number.
