MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY- Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Carter spends most of his 8 hour shift outside. He's beating the heat by downing water and by using 'cool cop.'
"I use it everyday in the summertime," he said Friday.
It is a device that resembles the tube of a vacuum cleaner. It is plugged into the dash board air conditioning unit and provides instant relief. 'Cool Cop' reduces Carter's core temperature by allowing air to penetrate his bullet-proof, Kevlar vest.
"Some said I looked like Robo Cops, there were some jokes. But that quickly went away, people started purchasing their own," he remembered of being the first on the force to buy one.
"I put off getting one for awhile," colleague Dwayne Pickett admitted.
The pair use the devices each time they get in their car for just a few minutes to cool down.
Several other officers are also using the devices and at least one K-9 handler has purchased one for his partner.
Sheriff Jon Hayden tells Local 6 he is considering buying the devices for his entire department.
