BROOKPORT, Ill. - Local lawmakers visited the storm-ravaged area on Monday, including Illinois Representative Brandon Phelps, who got his first look at the devastation today.

"I never wanted to go through this again, what we went through in Harrisburg. You know.. this is just as bad. Just as bad," he said.

Phelps admitted it was worse than he imagined and told us it brings back bad memories of what Ridgeway and Harrisburg went through years ago.

Many homeowners are trying to save all they can. However, many of them do not know where to start.

The people of Brookport are cleaning up their community and crews from around the area are helping as well.

Luckily, these people do not have to recover alone.

Phelps says he hopes that Brookport will receive some help soon.

Massac County has been officially declared a disaster area. Phelps is unsure of what type of assistance the folks there can receive, but he's hopeful they will get what they need.

Illinois state law changed for people who want to rebuild after natural disasters after the Harrisburg tornado. Property taxes stay the same after rebuilding so victims are not penalized.
