MURRAY, Ky. — The partial bridge collapse of the Eggners Ferry Bridge worries Murray State freshman Kristen Waldrop.
"It was definitely an inconvenience," she said.
She's one of nearly 300 students who travel the detour every day to get to campus.
"An hour and 20 minutes and I go though Grand Rivers, up Paducah and all the way around," Waldop said.
But her trip to class could be much shorter now that the university is offering to house students like her in empty dorm rooms.
"We have got enough space that I felt that we could try to help students who may need it," said Housing Director David Wilson.
Wilson said a handful of students began asking for help last week. He said much of the concern was from students living at home and are now spending hundreds of dollars a week in gas.
"Maybe for those 18, 19, 20 year-olds that are commuting from their parents home, this may be something that would help with gas prices," he said.
Wilson said prices vary depending on dorm preference but they are pro-rated so students pay for the number of weeks remaining in the semester. Waldrop would take the university's offer but said her mom is considering a closer move.
'I think my mom may be moving up here just because it is really inconvenient. It was bad," said Waldrop.
