Metropolis City Council to decide whether to purchase flood-damaged homes
METROPOLIS, Ill. - The City Council of Metropolis, Illinois will decide Monday night if they will buy vacant homes damaged by floodwaters in 2011.
Mayor Billy McDaniel told the Paducah Sun if the city did not buy them, homeowners would have to wait another 90 days for the State Emergency Management Agency to purchase them.
If the City Council agrees, the agency will reimburse the city for buying the homes, which keeps people from waiting even longer for payouts.
McDaniel tells the newspaper the city will spend up to $360,000 on the damaged houses.
City Attorney Rick Abell says he expects the City Council to approve the funds unanimously.
