MCCRACKEN COUNTY, Ky. - A Metropolis, Illinois man faces felony theft charges after McCracken County, Kentucky deputies say he scammed multiple victims out of thousands of dollars.

The sheriff's department says it began investigating 47-year-old John Thompson in mid-June after receiving a complaint that he owed a man money that had not been paid for more than a year.

The victim gave deputies copies of contracts signed by Thompson, along with a check for more than $17,000 from Thompson that could not be cashed due to lack of funds.

Thompson told deputies in June that the situation resulted from a business deal that had gone bad. Deputies say Thompson made several promises after the investigation began, but never fulfilled them.

Detectives later received a tip that Thompson had scammed a second victim out of thousands of dollars. The investigation continued and detectives found a total of seven people who had invested a combined $76,000 to Thompson.

A McCracken County Grand Jury indicted Thompson last Friday on seven felony counts of Theft by Deception. He was arrested without incident Monday morning.

Thompson is in the McCracken County Jail.
