NEW MADRID COUNTY, Mo. - A highway patrol trooper from Troop E in Southeastern Missouri will be recognized today for his heroic act in New Madrid County.

Governor Jay Nixon is set to present a Medal of Valor to James Cooksy, Jr.

Cooksey, along with two civilians and another trooper, swam into a flooded drainage ditch to try and save the life of a man in St. John's Bayou in June 2011.

Unfortunately, the man did not survive.

Cooksey and seven other recipients were chosen for extraordinary acts of bravery and heroism in efforts to save the lives of Missourians last year.

The ceremony takes place at 2 p.m. in Jefferson City.
