Murray State football player arrested on assault charge
UPDATE: The Callwoay County Sheriff's Office says they recieved a call October 19 of a possible assault that had occurred at the Calloway County Fair Grounds. Investigators said a young lady stated she had been assaulted by her ex-boyfriend while at the fairgrounds. After deputies interviewed the victim, they secured a warrant for the arrest of Walter Powell. The investigation is ongoing.
MURRAY, Ky. — A Murray State University football player was arrested and charged with 4th Degree Assault early Monday morning.
An official with the Calloway County Jail confirms that Walter Powell arrived at the jail at 12:25a.m. on Monday, October 21. Powell is charged with 4th Degree Assault and Theft by Unlawful Taking.
WPSD Local 6 is working to obtain additional details surrounding Powell's arrest.
The Murray State senior is a wide receiver with MSU's football team.
Official statement from the Murray State Athletics Department regarding Walter Powell:
"The Athletic Department is aware of the incident involving Walter Powell, and has been investigating it the past few days in an attempt to identify the facts surrounding the matter. We do not condone any type of behavior that would embarrass the program, the University or be harmful to any individual. Based on our findings to date, and current knowledge of the event in question, we do not believe any suspension or punishment is warranted. Should additional information come to light, the matter will be reexamined as necessary."
