New area code under consideration in western Kentucky

A new area code could soon become a reality for many in western Kentucky.

The Kentucky Public Service Commission is considering two options that will lead to the creation of a 364 area code in all or a portion of the current 270 area code.

One option would be to split the 270 area code, meaning parts of the area would be forced to change theirs to 364.

Another option wouldn't change anyone's number, but would assign new numbers to the 364 area code.

That means you would need to dial the area code for all phone calls, even local ones.

This conversion could happen by 2014, when the FCC expects the area to run out of available 270 phone numbers.

The PSC is currently taking public comments and will hold meeting over the change next month.

The dates and locations of those meetings are expected to be announced in the next few weeks.
