One boy dead, another hospitalized after falling through ice

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. -  A 12-year-old Carterville boy is dead after falling through ice on a frozen pond. Williamson County Coroner Junior Burke says the boy drowned following an accident on the pond, near Arbor Drive in Carterville.

Burke says two boys were walking across an ice-covered pond when the ice broke and they fell into the water shortly before 5:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon.  Both boys were transferred to Herrin Hospital.

One boy was pronounced dead, and the other is being treated at the hospital.

Carterville Fire and Ambulance Department, Carterville Police Department, and the Williamson County Sheriff's Department assisted at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
