PADUCAH- As millions of people place pre-orders and wait for the latest and greatest in iPhones, many haven't given a single thought of what to do with their perfectly fine, yet older phones. No doubt many will get passed down to family members or friends, but a fair number will end up stuffed in a closet never to be seen again.
Several websites now offer cash for cell phones. Sites like usell.com and exchangemyphone.com allow you to enter the device type, the condition, and get a quote of what it's worth. If you like what you see you print a shipping address and send it off. An iPhone 4s in good condition could sell for up to $191.
Apple will also take phones off your hands when you make the trade. They don't offer cash, but you can get the value of your old phone in iTunes gift cards.
If your phone is older than a few years you might consider recycling a cell phone. Places like Guardian Family Services in Metropolis, Illinois collect phones to give to domestic violence victims.
"It could save someones life," said director, Rita Gower. Even without a phone plan, a cell phone can dial 911.
Gower says there are bins out at the Metropolis City Clerk's office and Linwood Motors. Phones can also be dropped off at the facility which is located at 117 West 10th Street in Metropolis.
Operationgratitude.com is a site that collects cell phones and uses the money to send care packages to troops overseas.
Gower said she usually sees an increase in donation at her facility around the time of a new phone launch. She added that even if old phones don't end up in her hands, she hopes they end up where someone else can use them.
