CALVERT CITY, Ky. - An overturned semi blocked the westbound ramp from Interstate 24 Exit 25 to the Purchase Parkway (Fulton/Murray exit) for most of Christmas Day.

Keith Todd, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesperson, informed Local 6 that the wreck occurred mid-morning. Because it was downwind of the crash, the southbound Purchase Pkwy to westbound I-24 ramp was closed as well as a precaution.

Once crews shifted from containment to recovery mode, it took almost 12 hours to off-load the containers and clean the area. The all-clear came a little after midnight, when all ramps were reopened to traffic.

According to Marshall County Emergency Management, the material was a caustic solution of Potassium Hydroxide and Potassium Carbonate--used in many industrial processes.  It was not considered a threat to the community.  Following HAZMAT guidelines, crews established a 150 ft. perimeter around the crash site while containing and recovering the material.

No word yet on whether the driver suffered injuries.
