PADUCAH - Paducah Police are warning residents of a hoax email circulating in the area that supposedly is a traffic citation from the state of New York.

The email claims to be a Uniform Traffic Ticket from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, issued by the New York State Police. It may contain the subject line, "Uniform Traffic Ticket."

The email requests that the recipient open an attached zip file, while allegedly is a copy of the ticket to fill out and send to a town court. Authorities believe the zip file contains a computer virus. It is being analyzed by the New York State Police computer forensics lab.

Residents who receive the email should not open the email or the attachment. Those who already have opened the email attachment should run their antivirus software and take steps to ensure their computer system is safe.

If you receive the email, please do not forward it to the Paducah Police Department of the New York State Police. Delete the email, then empty your computer's "Deleted Items" folder.
