Police officer charged in death of senior citizen

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ill. - A southern Illinois officer is charged with involuntary manslaughter along with other charges for allegedly killing a man.

The Franklin County State's Attorney said William McKinney, a Buckner police officer, arrested 62-year-old Roy Barnhart.

An investigation by Illinois State Police showed Barnhart was taken to Herrin Hospital and then St. Louis University Hospital after his arrest.

He was treated for a head injury, which caused a brain bleed.

Barnhart later died at the hospital.

McKinney is charged with involuntary manslaughter, aggravated battery of a senior citizen and official misconduct.

Bond is set for $500,000.
