PADUCAH - Stepping up for a healthier life is something many of us talk about on a regular basis, but a local group of kids are doing something about it.
According to a recent CDC report, 17 percent of kids (12.5 million) between ages two through 19 are obese.
But kids are stepping up at Concord Elementary to get healthier and exercising to prevent obesity, which as Shelby Bledsoe points out, is better than the alternative. "If you're sitting on the couch all day watching tv, you end up a couch potato, which is not good."
That's why Western Baptist Hospital donated $16,000 worth of indoor and outdoor exercise equipment to the school. It's focused fun, designed to be a workout, that helps kids burn calories and build core strength.
Garret Childress sees the workout as a challenge. "It's kind of tough, but once you get used to it, it gets easier."
And while the kids do get ribbons for conquering the equipment, the big reward is confidence, strength, agility, and better health.
But the kids aren't the only ones who'll be getting in shape. Adults need to set a good example, and that's why this equipment is for everyone in the community--so they can get in shape too.
Concord Elementary Physical Education teacher Rae Ann Walker thinks a good example could go a long way: "If the parents can start exercising and taking care of their health, they'll pass it on to their kids."
And that's a great way to avoid heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes in the future.
