LIVINGSTON COUNTY, Ky.---A local man disappeared during what was supposed to be a fun afternoon hanging out with his two children.
A Livingston County Sheriff's Deputy told Local 6 it happened just after two P.M. in the Ohio River between Golconda, Illinois, and Berry's Ferry in Livingston County, Kentucky.
The dad was with his two children in a boat, fishing and swimming when the unthinkable happened.
Rescuers know the more time passes, their odds of finding the man alive go down.
But rescuers also know there are two kids on the Illinois side of the shore, hoping that just maybe their dad will come back.
"We don't meet people because it's a nice pretty day, we meet people because they're calling us and they have a problem and they need our help," Livingston County Sheriff's Deputy Kenny Vincent, said.
Tuesday it was two children calling for help, stranded on a boat in the middle of the Ohio River. Their dad had been swimming with them, but suddenly, he disappeared.
"I love my dad more than anything else in the world if I was to lose my dad I don't know what I would do," Vincent said.
Vincent is one of many out on the water, using sonar to search.
If rescuers get tired and considering quitting, all they have to do is look toward the Illinois shore, and they're encouraged to keep going.
"That's Golconda Marina right there, they do have a command post set up and that's where the family stays at," Vincent told us.
There's a wife, and two children hoping their father will return.
The one thing helping crews is the drought, and low water levels.
"It's a lot less to worry about. The deeper the water you got, you got a larger area," Vincent said.
But after an evening of optimistic searching? No evidence of the missing dad, and rescuers prepare for day two.
Rescuers will be back out on the water Wednesday morning. The Livingston County Emergency Management Deputy Director said there were seven search boats out on the water, including the Coast Guard, most of the rescuers are volunteer,
many of them from other counties.
