CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University president Glenn Poshard announced his retirement on Thursday after nearly eight years holding the position.

But he's not dreaming about fishing and time with family quite yet.

His retirement is effective June 30th of 2014 and he says he has plans to make the most out of his final year.

"My plan is to concentrate my energy on this next year at the university. I love this place, it's afforded me great opportunities over the whole of my life, from being a student to being president. I owe it everything that I can give to it," said Poshard.

Poshard enrolled at SIU at 20 years old after serving three years in the military.

"When I was here as a kid on this campus trying to get a degree, I wouldn't have dreamed in my wildest dreams that I would end being president of this university," said Poshard.

He says of all the fond memories on the SIU campus, accepting the position as president will always be his best.

Poshard plans to be heavily involved in campus life, especially campus finances, up until his last day on the job, and even beyond that.

He says he will always be a Saluki.
