Southern Illinois University spokesperson Rod Sievers confirmed that a student fell out a window on the fourth floor of University Hall early this morning.

University Hall is a residence hall on the east side of campus near Wall Street.

In a message Friday morning, Chancellor Rita Cheng identified the student as freshman Tyler Gravitt of Matteson.

Gravitt  was taken to Carbondale Memorial Hospital, then to a St. Louis hospital with what Sievers referred to as "serious injuries."

SIU police is investigating the incident, but authorities say the fall appears accidental.
