PADUCAH - Mike Quarles enjoys his daily afternoon walk but he doesn't always enjoy the passersby.

"That's 35 miles an hour? In their dream," said Mike Quarles.

He's fed up with drivers who he says are constantly testing the 35 miles an hour speed limit.

"You'd be surprised how many people walk up and down this same sidewalk and someone just whiz you by," he said.

A 2007 traffic study by the city of Paducah backs up Quarles' concern. That study found between 86 and 96% of drivers were traveling above the posted speed limit.

Paducah Police Cpt. Donald Hodgson knows Pecan Drive is a heavy traffic area, but says the number of accidents and complaints don't warrant too much police supervision.

"I'd say if you're concerned about walking on the sidewalks here, then you should walk somewhere else," Cpt. Hodgson said.

For Quarles, it's not just the speeding. He says drivers often become impatient if they get behind someone going the speed limit.

"I have seen people pass in the no passing zone and in the turn lane. I've actually seen double yellow line, That's a no no no no no. One screw up, you could be dead," he said.
