State police say suspect missing after home invasion, attempted murder
POPE COUNTY, Ill. — Illinois State Police say a man stabbed an 82-year-old in Pope County Sunday after entering the man's home on the pretense of making a phone call.
The suspect reportedly stabbed Herschel D. Matheny, of Karbers Ridge, in the chest after Matheny gave him the phone. He then struggled with another resident, 75-year-old Jacqueline C. Hicks, demanding money.
In a release, ISP said Hicks told the suspect she could get money from another room. She returned with a firearm and forced the suspect to leave.
Matheny was flown to an Evansville hospital and is expected to survive.
The suspect is still at large.
