Arbritation begins this morning between members of the AFSCME union and the State of Illinois over the closing of several state run prision and detention centers, including the supermax prision at Tamms.

Last week, the union filed a lawsuit claiming that the closures create an unsafe environment for workers in the state penal system.

For now, the closing of these facilities are on hold, but they might not be for long.

On friday, the judge in the case is expected to hold a conference call between the two parties to see if they've reached an agreement. If they haven't, the judge can then rule on the temporary restraining order to slow the process down or dismiss the lawsuit all together.

Right now, the Tamms prison is scheduled to close at the end of the month.
