PADUCAH, Ky - USEC officals say they're still working on a possible short-term extension to continue enriching uranium at Paducah's Gaseous Diffusion Plant.

However, they say there's no guarantee they'll come to an agreement.

A challenging economic environment may also have an impact on keeping the plant open.

USEC released their quarterly financial report Monday, which showed the company lost $2 million in the first three months of the year.

One reason:  prolonged outage of more than 50 reactors in Japan and Germany, lowering demand for enriched uranium.

Because of the challenges, the report added keeping the plant open might not help the company economically.  Right now, the plant is expected to cease most operations at the end of this month.
