WINGO, Ky. — Shannon Lacewell was arrested Tuesday and charged with animal cruelty, that after investigators raided her Wingo, Kentucky, property, home to the 'Paws and Claws' rescue group.
While some of the dogs were dead, 96 were able to be transported to Nashville for veterinary care, where the remain.
Lacewell is adamant, saying she wasn't responsible for the dog's bad health, explaining that some of the dogs had come from puppy mills and she was in the process of rehabing them.
She also showcased where the dogs were kept, saying at times things did get a little messy but she always cared for her animals properly.
"When I got off work, I would come in and usually clean, feed, water and play with them until 4 in the morning," said Lacewell.
Lacewell said she won't reopen the shelter. She said she has retired from the rescue business.
The dogs will remain at the fairgrounds for now. Eventually, they'll be placed with other shelters and put up for adoption.
