PADUCAH, Ky.---At first she made T-shirts and passed around a petition to save Noble Park's so called "Duck Island" from demolition.

While Paducah City leaders say duck island is safe for now one of the island's most adamant supporters says she knows how to protect it for the long term, by being elected to the mayor's office.
Renee Raney announced told Local 6 she's registered as a write-in candidate for Paducah's race for mayor.
That means mayoral candidate and current city commissioner Gayle Kaler faces opposition, once again, just two months from the general election.
Raney said the decision to run came after Robert Coleman dropped out of the race last week, because of poor health. Raney, who is a hair stylist, college student, and single mother of two admits she didn't plan on running for mayor at this point in her life but says couldn't bear the thought of Commissioner Gayle Kaler running unopposed, and decided to do something about it

It all started with saving Duck Island.

"That's when I really started noticing things and really getting involved more," Raney said.

Now Renee Raney, who's spent 16 years cutting hair is focused on cutting costs.

"I started noticing different things in different areas, too much money here and too much money there," Raney said.

"I definitely wouldn't be putting another hotel in here because we have too many of those right now. When you start making cuts in areas that you don't need to be spending anyway then I think you're actually saving money in those areas.  I have to study the budget a little I'm just now getting more into the budget," Raney said. 

"So you're not really sure what areas need to be cut," we asked.

Right, right, but I know they're probably in there," Raney responded.

What is for certain is Renee Raney is in the race.
and Local 6 obtained the paperwork to prove it.

Raney said she's confident she can prove she's the right person for the job.

"With faith, courage, and the power of the people anything is possible," Raney said.

For now Raney is the only write-in candidate for the Paducah mayoral election.
The McCracken County Deputy clerk said it's important to note that write-in candidates names are not posted anywhere in the polling places. 

Election officers are only allowed to show voters the write-in candidates names, if they ask for it.

We caught up with Gayle Kaler and asked for her response to having a new opponent so late in the game.

"I'm going to run my campaign just like I've been running it all along, I don't have any plans to change it. Just keep getting out, meeting people doing door to door. Doing the same thing," Kaler said.

The deputy county clerk says there are three candidates running unopposed in McCracken County this year;     
The Commonwealth Attorney, Circuit Clerk, and First District State Representative.
