Julie Collins is thrilled to be a part of the WPSD-TV news team! She stays busy finding, researching and reporting on stories of interest in the four state region.
Julie began her journalism career at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, a graduate of the Mass Communication College, Julie minored in Speech Communication in 2007. After graduation she moved to Southern California where she worked on the morning show "Daybreak OC"
In 2004 Julie interned at WMAQ-TV NBC 5 in Chicago and throughout college, worked diligently on SIUC's River Region news team where she picked up a few awards; including one individual and 2 team Broadcast Education Association awards, respectively winning third place for her investigative piece "Housing Headaches" where she did in-depth research on just how dangerous some balconies and porches can be at apartment complexes around college campuses; and Best Student Newscast, and Team, both 1st in the nation.
To date her most memorable stories include Presidential hopeful, Barrack Obama’s candidacy kick off in the shadow of the State House in Springfield Illinois, the deadly and devastating fires of Southern California in 2007, and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas's only college campus visit during his book tour, which was subsequently picked up by the Associated Press. Her most desired interview will regrettably never come to pass on earth, that of her late maternal grandfather, Papa.
Julie's keen interest in journalism is rooted in two passions: 1) the ability to learn something new every day and 2) meeting the people who teach her those things … and as a bonus, with the outdoors as her office! In her free time, this Midwestern native enjoys exploring her new surroundings with her puppy Al. She looks forward to meeting many new and exciting people every day, and knows this is the perfect place to do it!
