SIKESTON, Mo. - Police say an 11-year-old boy shot his 9-year-old sister in the shoulder with a .40 caliber pistol Sunday evening.

The Sikeston Department of Public Safety is investigating the shooting that sent the 9-year-old girl to the hospital with a gunshot wound to her left shoulder. Medical personnel say they expect the child to recover from the injury.

Police say the two were in their father's bedroom, inside a home on Reubun Street, when they happened upon the gun.

The investigation is ongoing. We'll update this story when more information is released by police.
