Cape Girardeau gas stations to implement prepay policy May 1
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Cape Girardeau Police Department announced that all gas stations within the city will implement a prepaid-only policy beginning May 1.
The decision came after a meeting between merchants and the police department about solutions to the problem of drivers taking off without paying for gasoline. Gas station owners agreed to voluntarily enforce the new policy until an ordinance can be drafted and presented to the City Council.
The department says in the past seven months alone, 306 gas drive-offs have been investigated in the city. One officer even spent as much as 85 percent of his time on the job investigating such incidents.
That officer found that drivers often can't be located due to limited information and that many incidents are unintentional and result in no criminal charges.
