Dorena-Hickman Ferry closed due to heavy ice, re-opened
The Dorena-Hickman Ferry is open and running on normal winter hours.
UNDATED - The Dorena-Hickman Ferry has closed due to heavy ice on the Mississippi River.
After resuming service from ten days of closure due to freezing rain, sleet, and extreme cold, the ferry halted operation this morning around 10 a.m.
Captain Ed Floyd says although the ice that had iced over the ferry landings have melted, ice flowing downstream from the Mississippi River is now the problem.
Several tow boat pilots have indicated ice covers more of the river, and is thicker upstream of the Dorena-Hickman Ferry Crossing, extending all the way to Cairo, Illinois.
The ferry will remain closed until it is safe to resume operations.
