Man dies in crash while fleeing Cape Girardeau police
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - One man is dead after crashing his car in an attempt to flee police.
The crash occurred this morning at 5:41 a.m. as the driver led police on a chase following an incident in a nearby parking lot.
The chase began when officers responded to an incident in the parking lot of 618 North Street in which a man allegedly threatened another person with a gun. The man who made the alleged threats then left the scene when police attempted to stop him, leading to the ensuing chase and crash.
The driver veered off the road and struck a tree at Perryville Road and Rotary Drive. He was alone in the car and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
A search of the man's vehicle turned up a firearm similar to the one described by witnesses.
Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Clifton is not releasing the name of the man until family has been notified.
