Nearly 50 train cars derail. Preliminary cause: high winds
SCOTT COUNTY, Mo. – High winds that swept through Missouri Tuesday night, are being blamed for derailing nearly 50 train cars.
It happened near Rockview, in Scott County, around 9:20pm. Mark Davis with Union Pacific says 48 of the train’s 112 cars overturned. The train, which was also pulling three locomotives, was on its way from Chicago to Mexico.
No injuries were reported.
Davis says heavy equipment arrived Wednesday morning to pick up the cars. Crews are also working on other repairs, which include replacing about 30 railroad ties and some 800 feet of track. They’re also working to reattach 400 feet of rail.
No word on when the line will reopen. Until then, trains are being detoured around the site.
