MANILA, Philippines (AP) - Officials in the Philippines say the country appears to have avoided a major disaster from one of the strongest storms on record, because the rapidly-moving typhoon blew away before it could do additional damage.

The storm slammed into the central Philippines today, killing at least four people and forcing hundreds of thousands from their homes.

The storm generated landslides and knocked out power and communication lines in several provinces. At least four people died.

Due to cut-off communications, it's impossible to know the full extent of casualties and damage.
