Firefighters stress importance of fire safety during winter months
MAYFIELD, Ky. - Unfortunately for firefighters, they say winter is always their busy season. While they don't like to get the calls about house fires, they're always glad to arrive on a scene to find everyone made it out safely.
Captain Jeremy Creason, Training Officer for Mayfield Fire Department, said their main focus has always been on kids.
"The more we stress it to them the more likely they are to go home and talk to their parents," he said.
Graves County 6th grader Lauren Bradbury said after learning about fire prevention in school, she did go home to talk to her parents, but she and her friends say they don't think their parents are paying attention.
"We're always talking about what happened if a fire did occur, but I don't really think we take as seriously as we should," she said.
Reese Anderson agrees. He said he knows how to get out of his house in case of a fire and hopes his family remembers their meeting spot, but he's sure not all adults have a plan.
"They think it might not happen, but when it does they're not prepared and that's when the real accidents happen," he said.
