EDDYVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The contractor fixing the Eggners Ferry Bridge has begun assembling the steel flooring structure.
A span of the bridge over Kentucky Lake was knocked down in January when a ship struck it. The bridge carries about 3,000 vehicles per day between Aurora and the Land Between the Lakes federal reserve.
The Paducah Sun reported workers put together the flooring frame over the weekend. The project has a May 27 deadline and Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Keith Todd said the timeline is tight. State officials and merchants want it done in time for the lakes region tourist season.
When the steel is assembled, it will be floated by barge to the bridge and lifted into place by cranes. Concrete decking with then be poured. The replacement span is 322 feet long.
