Dr. Howard Winston Mathis, 71, of Salem, KY, passed away Monday, December 30, 2013, at his home.
Dr. Mathis was a graduate of North Marshall County High School; Murray State University, where he received his bachelor of arts degree; and the Southern School of Optometry in Memphis, TN, were he received his doctorate degree.
Dr. Mathis was a lifetime member of the Kentucky Optometric Association; the American Optometric Association; Marion Lions Club; and was on the board of directors of the Crittenden and Livingston County Health Departments.
Dr. Mathis was a member of Salem Baptist Church, and owned and operated his own private practice in Marion, KY for over 40 years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Marcella Mathis of Salem, KY, one step-daughter, Felicia Belcher, and her husband Rudy of Henderson, KY; one sister, Wanda Sue Melton of Salem, KY; two grandchildren, Megan Belcher of Henderson, KY, and Kris (John) Belcher of Evansville, IN; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard Winston Mathis, Sr. and Ada Rountree Mathis.
Funeral services will be Friday, January 3, 2014, at 2PM, in the chapel of Boyd Funeral Directors in Salem, with the Rev’s. Chuck Ellis and John East officiating. Burial will follow in Salem Cemetery.
Friends may call Thursday, January 2, 2014, from 5 to 7PM, in the chapel of Boyd Funeral Directors in Salem.
