Clint Elmo Reed, 94 of Benton, KY., passed away Monday, April 22, 2013, at 11:40 p.m. at the Eastern Kentucky Veterans Center in Hazard, Kentucky.
Born September 4, 1918 in Benton, KY., throughout his childhood, he developed strong propensity for music that after graduation from high school, he attended and graduated with a degree in Music from Murray State University and furthered his education and completed a Master of Science Degree from Columbia University.
He also received a professional degree from Juilliard School. He was nationally recognized for his classical guitar education program. He taught music theory at Butler University, he taught classical guitar and was a member of the music faculty at Murray State University. He taught elementary music and classical guitar in the Marshall County School System. He performed with the stringed bass for the Indianapolis Symphony and for the New York Philharmonic. He and his wife also owned and operated Reed's Music in Benton, KY. World War II caused a break in his career when he was call upon to serve his country in the U.S. Army.
Surviving are his wife, Doris (O'Dell) Reed of Benton, KY., three sons, Harry C. Reed of Benton, KY, Paul Clinton Reed of Louisville, KY and David Reed of Louisville, KY, two daughters, Lee Ann Reed of Marianne, FL and Joyce Brown of Vinton, VA. Nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cliff and Nina (Cole) Reed, three sisters, Hazel Park, Hester Stone and Wilma Park.
Friends may visit with the family between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Friday, April 26, 2013 at the Collier Funeral Home in Benton, KY.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of the Collier Funeral Home, Benton, KY.
Interment will follow the service in the Lyles Cemetery, Benton, KY.
