Mid-Continent Volleyball Loses at Union

Union University (23-4, 7-4 TSAC) recorded a 25-13, 25-15, 25-8 straight-set victory over Mid-Continent University (2-15, 0-12 TSAC) in Oct. 20 TranSouth conference volleyball action at Delay Gym in Jackson, Tennessee.

MCU hosts third-place Trevecca Nazarene University in TranSouth conference action at MCU’s Cougar Center, Friday, Oct. 23, at 6:00 p.m., and takes on St. Catharine College at 1:00 and Brescia University at 3:00, Saturday, Oct. 24, in non-conference doubleheader action at Caldwell County High School in Princeton, Kentucky.

In set one, Union led 11-6 and with an ace and three kills and three MCU errors, the Bulldogs scored the next seven points for an 18-6 advantage. MCU countered with three kills and cut the lead to 18-9. In set two, MCU began with a 4-1 lead before Union scored the next five points and later led by as many as 10 points, 23-13, and 24-14. Set three went Union’s way from the start as the hosts led 5-1 and steadily pushed the lead to 20-6 and 21-7 before serving out a 25-8 set.

Union totaled 39 kills with 10 errors in 95 attempts (.305) and committed no service reception errors and totaled 59 digs. MCU finished with 19 kills with 16 errors in 101 attempts and dug up 41 Union attacks.

MCU’s kills leader, junior outside hitter Katie Perry (Anchorage, AK/Grace Christian School) totaled 6 kills, 10 digs and one solo block, and successfully passed 16 opponent serves. MCU’s digs leader, junior outside hitter Tiffany Payton (Wadesville, IN/Mater Dei HS/Kaskaskia College, IL) led the team with 7 kills and recorded 4 digs and passed 10 service receptions. Freshman setter Kelsey Swindler (West Memphis, TN/West Memphis HS) set 15 assists and added 4 digs, and freshman libero Lorraine Vaughan (Russellville, KY/Logan County HS) finished with 9 digs and successfully passed 29 Union serves with no errors. Freshman outside hitter Kristin Selph (Jackson, TN/Liberty HS) contributed 4 kills and 9 digs.

Union was led by Heather Lieberman with 12 kills and 11 digs and Kelsey Duling with 11 kills and 15 digs. Lauren Sprouse totaled 18 digs, and setter Katie Adams assisted on 31 kills and had 4 kills and 5 digs.
