Indiana-Southeast takes two from MCU baseball

New Albany, IN – Indiana University-Southeast (25-11) held off a late charge by Mid-Continent University (7-22) and won game one, 16-11, and came from 6-4 down to win game two, 7-6, in eight innings in non-conference collegiate baseball doubleheader action, Tuesday, April 6, at Indiana University-Southeast in New Albany. Mid-Continent hosts Brescia University, Wednesday, April 7, for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader at Cougar Field on the MCU campus.

In game one, Indiana-Southeast scored 2 runs in the first inning and 5 more in the third inning and led 7-0 before Mid-Continent got on the scoreboard with 6 runs in the fourth inning. IUS made the score 9-6 with 2 runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth for a 14-6 lead, but Mid-Continent challenged again with 4 runs in the sixth to slice the lead to 14-10. IUS scored twice in the sixth for a 16-10 lead and MCU scored its final run in the seventh inning for the 16-11 final.

MCU totaled 8 hits and received 6 walks from five IUS pitchers. Freshman second baseman Joe Joe Simms (Springfield, KY/Washington County HS) crashed his first collegiate home run, a three-run blast in the fourth inning, and cut the IUS lead to 7-4. Junior third baseman Lance Davis (Paducah, KY/Heath HS) followed later with a two-RBI double down the left-field line in the same inning, bringing the Cougars back to 7-6 down. Davis later contributed a sacrifice fly ball in the sixth inning for a third RBI.

The Grenadiers totaled 17 hits, 7 for extra bases, against 3 Cougar pitchers, beating starter Hunter Burge (Arlington, KY/Carlisle County HS/Southeastern Illinois College), now 2-1, with 9 runs, 8 earned, on 9 hits and a walk in the first 3-2/3 innings. IUS touched up sophomore lefthander Kyle Bugg (Mayfield, KY/St. Mary’s HS) for 4 runs, one earned, and 3 hits in one inning, and scored 3 runs, 2 earned, on 5 hits in the final 1-1/3 inning against sophomore righthander Caleb Luttrell (Murphysboro, IL/Murphysboro HS).

IUS centerfielder Cam Conner led off the first inning with a solo home run, his second of the year, and leftfielder Nick Crady hit his second home run of the season, a two-run shot in the third inning. Designated hitter Kyle Lenn belted his 12th home run of the season, a two-run long fly in the fifth inning and also had 2 doubles and 3 RBI in the game. Conner, shortstop Jordan Pass, Crady, and second baseman Derek Mills each had 2 hits, and first baseman Dan McDonald had 3 hits and an RBI.

In game two, sophomore LF William Ruthven (Marked Tree, AR/Marked Tree HS/Three Rivers CC, MO) smacked his first home run of the season, a three-run shot over the left-field fence in the third inning, giving MCU a 3-2 lead after IUS scored one in the first inning on a two-base sacrifice fly ball and one more run in the second inning. Ruthven had hit safely in 13 of his last 15 games.

IUS tied the game at 3-3 with one run in the fourth inning, and MCU took a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning when sophomore first baseman Adam Connor (Murphysboro, IL/Murphysboro HS) belted a long triple that hit off the centerfield fence and scored a few pitches later on a wild pitch by starter Daniel Kafoure, who allowed 4 runs, 3 earned, 4 hits and 2 walks and struck out 4 in 5 innings of work.

But again IUS tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth, and again MCU scored a go-ahead run to lead 5-4 on a bloop single by sophomore shortstop Daniel Edwards (Paducah, KY/Lone Oak HS/Rend Lake CC, IL). MCU added one more in the seventh inning on an RBI ground ball out by Simms and led 6-4.

Facing a loss in the bottom of the seventh, Lenn hit a two-run home run, his 13th of the season, and tied the game at 6-6, against MCU righthander Jacob McMican (Marion, KY/Crittenden County HS/Three Rivers CC, MO). McMican, now 2-7 this season, allowed a single to third baseman Jeff Klump leading off the eighth inning. Klump was sacrificed to second base and took third on a passed ball and scored the game-winner on a single by pinchhitter Justin Hurst.

MCU totaled 6 hits and received 4 walks from four IUS pitchers, including 2 critical lead-off walks in the sixth inning when MCU took a 5-4 lead. IUS totaled 9 hits and received 3 walks from MCU. MCU committed 5 errors which led to 3 unearned runs, and IUS committed 3 errors leading to an unearned run. Lenn was 2 for 3 with3 more RBI and McDonald and Klump each went 2 for 4. Connor had 2 hits for MCU.
