A Decade of Glory: Mayfield's decade of dominance
In our decade of Gridiron Glory, no team has made more deep playoff runs than the Mayfield Cardinals. Since 2002, they've been in the state semifinals seven times, the state finals four times and they've won two state championships.
In 2002, the Cardinals needed a 4th quarter touchdown from Derrick Parrott to clinch the 14-7 win over Beechwood, earning the Cardinals their seventh championship.
After falling short in the finals in 2005 and 2009, Mayfield was back again in 2010. Quarterback Luke Guhy threw five interceptions in the 2009 loss to Lexington Christian, a game he called the worst of his life. In 2010, he more than made up for it. Guhy earned MVP honors leading the Cardinals to a 47-6 rout of Hazard and the school's eight title.
In Mayfield's proud football tradition, only the 2002 and 2010 teams went 15-0. When we asked coach Joe Morris who he thought would win between those teams, he laughed and said he'd expect the game to go to overtime.
