Cantwell named QB Coach at Campbellsville

Former Paducah Tilghman quarterback Hunter Cantwell is the new quarterbacks coach at Campbellsville University in Campbellsville, KY.  Cantwell's new boss is his former coach.  Perry Thomas, Campbellsville's coach since 2008, coached Cantwell when he played at Paducah Tilghman.

After graduating from Louisville, Cantwell went undrafted in 2009.  He signed as a free agent with the Carolina Panthers and then spent the next three seasons on the practice squads of the Panthers and Baltimore Ravens.

Last week, the Jacksonville Jaguars offered Cantwell a contract to be their third-string quarterback.  But the Jags couldn't guarantee they'd ultimately keep three quarterbacks on their final 53-man roster.  In the end, they could have cut him and he'd have once again been out of a job in August before the start of the regular season.  So Cantwell turned down the Jags' offer, and turned his attention to coaching.

Cantwell had contacted Perry Thomas back in the winter about the possibility of getting into coaching.  Thomas said he was interested in bringing Cantwell onto his staff but he had no openings at the time.  After some changes over the summer, Thomas now has an opening -- an opening Cantwell is ready to fill.

Thomas said Cantwell will have instant credibility with his players.  Cantwell has never coached before, but Thomas said Cantwell gave the best interview of any candidate he's ever tried to hire -- almost like Cantwell had been coaching for years.

Thomas is entering his fifth season at Campbellsville.  The Tigers are coming off a 7-5 season a year ago where they won the NCCAA Victory Bowl.
