Graves County girl proves football isn't just for menGRAVES COUNTY, KY-- The game of football is generally perceived as a guys sport, but don't say that to Graves County 7th grader, Brittany Smith. "I say no, because girls are just as tough as guys," said Smith. For the last five years, Brittany has been proving her toughness on the gridiron. "She's a great explosive player, who comes off the line real quick," explained teammate Dylan Hauser. "She gets off the line, and makes tackles." "Brittany is hard nosed," said Graves County middle school coach Tim Williams. "She doesn't back down from anybody." Brittany's mother Angela Ward was skeptical about her daughter playing football at first, but now it's grown on her. "I actually rather enjoy going to football games, and seeing the reactions on boys faces when she takes her helmet off," Ward said smiling. "They see it's a girl, and they're in shock, and the parents are like, that's not a girl. Yeah, it's a girl." While Brittany is honored to be the first girl ever to play football at Graves County Middle School, her ultimate message is to girls who have the same dream she did. "Hopefully other girls will try out to be like this, to be able to be a football player like me," she said. "The parents don't need to fear it," explained Ward. "If their little girl wants to do it, they need to let them." Brittany says she's going to keep giving it her all, in hopes of one day making the high school team.
