Joe Morris, Randy Wyatt have deep connection with rivalry
PADUCAH, KY -- Randy Wyatt and Joe Morris can sum up the Mayfield-Tilghman rivalry with just one word.
"Amazing," Mayfield head coach Joe Morris said.
"Exciting," said Tilghman head coach Randy Wyatt.
Morris played for the Cardinals in the early 80's, while Wyatt played for Tilghman at the end of the decade.
"You really want to win this game," Wyatt said. "Some feel like they would rather beat Tilghman or Mayfield, and not win state."
Wyatt never lost to Mayfield in his fours years as a player. However, Morris remembers falling to the Tornado in his senior season.
"We lost 7-6," said Morris. "That was the only loss we had that season before we lost in the playoffs. We should have won that game. I guess that stuck with me."
Fast forward to today, and both are now head coaches at their alma maters and the game still means the same.
"In 1999, after beating Tilghman for the first time, I felt like I belonged," Morris said. "I beat Tilghman as a head coach, and people accepted me more."
Wyatt however, is still looking for his first win against Mayfield since he took over the program in 2007.
"What I get is, "when are you going to beat Mayfield," Wyatt said. "I get that all the time. At the end of the day it is up to me."
And he hopes that he can be the coach to end Mayfield's seven game winning streak over the Tornado on Saturday.
