The Murray State Football team brought the 2013 spring practice season to a close Saturday with the playing of the annual Blue-Gold game at Roy Stewart Stadium in Murray, Ky.
The blue team won the game 42-14 in a scrimmage that had a good teaching scenario. With under :30 remaining, the Racers moved the ball down the field and scored at the buzzer on a short touchdown run.
Unofficially, the scrimmage included 77 plays with 710 yards of total offense with 591 coming from the pass and 119 on the ground.
After the game, MSU head coach Chris Hatcher was pleased with the play at the spring game and in the entire spring practice period.
“We had some new players and new coaches that we were breaking in as they got used to their style,” Hatcher said. “We had a good day. We played with energy and made plays on both sides of the ball. We had some good work with all the groups and everybody got into the game, so all in all, I was pleased.”
With the Racers breaking the spring portion of the year, thoughts immediately turn to the start of fall camp in early August as the Racers will commence their 88th season of collegiate football.
MSU’s 2013 recruiting class will join the team at that time.
“We give those guys a chance to show us what they can do,” Hatcher said. “We don’t have very many practices before that first game (Aug. 31 at Missouri) when those guys have to come in. A lot of times how quickly a young guy picks up our system determines how much he can play.”
The Racers now finish out the rest of the spring semester with off-season conditioning with an eye on the start of fall camp in early August.
The 2013 season begins with a game at Missouri (Aug. 31) in Columbia, Mo. The Racers’ home opener is against Campbellsville (Sep. 7) which will be Senior Day. The Racers help celebrate MSU Family Weekend (Sep. 14) with a home game against Missouri State. MSU Homecoming is Oct. 19 when the Racers host Austin Peay.
