Racers Run Past Freed Hardeman

MURRAY, KY-- The Murray State Racers used a 53-28 second half to score a 95-68 win over Freed-Hardeman in exhibition play Saturday at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.

Jarvis Williams led the way with a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds, while the Racers got 18 points from Jeffery Moss, 14 from Dexter Fields and 11 from Terron Gilmore.

Leading 42-40 at the half, the Racers pushed to a nine-point lead at the 18:15 mark when Williams fed Moss for a three. MSU was again up by nine (55-46) when Williams scored in the paint with 14:25 left.

MSU put the game away with an 18-2 run that started with a Fields three and two buckets by Williams. Cameron Payne made a driving layup followed by a Moss three and the Racers jumped to a 76-56 lead with 7:50 left. MSU increased the lead to 88-66 on a pair of jumpers from Gilmore with 3:50 left.

The Racers locked down the Lions in the second half in holding FHU to 11 field goals on 31 percent shooting. FHU was 33 percent (23-of-69) for the game, while MSU managed 44 percent (32-of-72). MSU hit eight three-point baskets in the game and held FHU to four. MSU went to the line 38 times and made 23 for 60 percent.

The Racers held a 30-22 edge on the boards in the first half and ended the game winning the rebound stat 57-43. MSU had 25 offensive rebounds in the game with seven coming from Williams and five from Zay Henderson.

MSU had only nine turnovers in the game.

Payne had a game-high eight assists and Williams made three steals.

In the first half, the Racers enjoyed their largest lead of six on seven occasions. Moss scored on a tip-in for a 30-24 lead at 7:03 and later the Racers led again by six at 36-30 when Jonathan Fairell put back his own miss at the 4:18 mark. The lead was 40-34 with 2:11 left when C.J. Ford led a fast break and found Fields for a three-pointer.

Murray State starts its 88th season of collegiate basketball Friday when they travel to Valparaiso, Ind., for the season opener with the Valparaiso Crusaders. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. (Nov. 8) at the Athletics Recreation Center. The game can be heard on GoRacers.com through the live stream of Froggy103.com.

MSU's home opener is Nov. 12 at the CFSB Center against Brescia.
