Racers start slow, finish strong in win over ETSU

MURRAY, Ky. (AP) - B.J. Jenkins scored 14 points and Murray State overcame a sluggish start to beat East Tennessee State 50-39 on Monday night.

Neither team could score until East Tennessee State got the first basket 3:43 into the game. Jeffery McClain hit a free throw for the first Racers' point with 14:40 left in the half, but East Tennessee built an 8-1 lead by the 11:08 mark.

Donte Poole and Jewuan Long then scored six points apiece in a 15-2 spurt to put Murray State (1-0) ahead for good.

The Racers led 22-17 at halftime, then quickly extended their lead into double figures.

After the Buccaneers (0-2) closed to 37-28 with 9:49 to go, Jenkins answered with a 3-pointer.

Murray State made 17 of 45 field goals (37.8 percent) while the Buccaneers hit 15 of 45 (33.3 percent).

Mike Smith was the only East Tennessee State player in double figures with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
