'Reign' Supreme: Local softball team #1 in region

Four years ago, a handful of local twelve year old girls wanted to take their love of softball to the next level.

"It worked out good that we found each other," pitcher Karlee Humphery said. "It was a coincidence, and there were six of us that really worked well together.  Then we developed a team based on those six after that."

But Rick Grogan says starting the Kentucky Reign traveling team was anything but easy.

"Through tryouts, trying to get people to come. Some decided not to, so we had a bit of a slow go there starting out."

Now the 16-and-under team is fully stocked with girls from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Illinois. They've won one tournament already this summer...and are currently ranked first out of 60 teams in eight states. Which Grogan just found out about.

"To be honest, I didn't take a look at it until just a couple of days ago," Grogan said.  "So it's not something we pay a lot of attention to on a regular basis, but it's a nice honor, once we get to that plateau."

So what has made the Reign so good, so quickly?

"I think it's the family atmosphere that we promote," Grogan said. "We've always done that from the outset when we got this team together, we recruited families as much as we did players."

"It's fun'" Humphery added. "Especially when you have a bond like our team does. We're like a family, pretty close."

The Reign plan to finish the summer out with college showcase tournaments to help get the girls more exposure for the next level.
