Southern Illinois running back Jewel Hampton has agreed to a free agent contract with the San Francisco 49ers.

Hampton will join a backfield that includes former Saluki Brandon Jacobs, who recently signed a one-year contract with San Francisco. The 49ers also return Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter in their backfield, and they drafted Oregon tailback LeMichael James in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

The Iowa transfer had a banner year in 2011, his only season at SIU. The Missouri Valley Football Conference Newcomer of the Year scored 17 touchdowns and rushed for 1,121 yards.

Including his time at Iowa, Hampton scored 25 career touchdowns in 26 games. He had nine multi-touchdown games in his career, seven of which came in 2011. He closed his career with four consecutive two-touchdown games.
